How to make the most out of Talented lessons
Learning music doesn’t have to be boring. Talented is designed to help you learn music in a fun, engaging way. Though it’s important to use the app as it was intended — as a daily practice tool to build your skill.
Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to get the maximum out of the app:
Personalized start
Complete a short onboarding and take a test to determine your goals and assess your level. Then get the right learning unit that matches your skills. Beginners don’t get overwhelmed with complex topics, while experienced musicians aren’t bored with the basics.
Learning Path
- Step-by-step progression: each lesson builds on the previous one.
- Learn to read notes, practice rhythm and timing, train your ear, and understand chords and patterns.
- Play short melody fragments on a digital piano to put theory into practice.
- Revisit lessons if you feel unsure or scored less than three stars—repetition is essential.
- A short assessment places non-beginners further along the path.
- Focus on gradual, steady learning; don’t rush through lessons.
Talent Gym
Once you’ve mastered the basics, Talent Gym becomes your daily workout. It’s divided into five areas: melodies, intervals, chords, rhythm, and sight-reading. Each area uses short, focused exercises to train your skills step by step. Some Steps will feel easy, others harder—that’s normal. The key principle: train the skill, not the Step. Over time, mistakes naturally decrease, and Steps that once seemed impossible become easy to pass. Talent Gym shows your progress in the Talent Tree, helping you build foundational skills like playing by ear, accurate singing, and a deeper musical sense—all through consistent, patient practice.
4. Take advantage of gamification
These features are not just for fun—they are designed to help you stay consistent, and consistency is the most important part of learning music. Developing musical skills takes time and repeated effort, and without a regular practice routine, progress can be slow or even invisible. By focusing on short, achievable tasks, you can maintain motivation and see real improvement over time.
To get the most out of Talented, set realistic daily goals and create a simple structure for your sessions. Focus on the process rather than the immediate results. Track your attempts, notice improvements in accuracy or speed, and celebrate small victories. This approach keeps you engaged, helps you feel progress, and turns practice into a rewarding, habit-forming routine.
The app is built like a game to keep you motivated:
- earn XP for completing lessons
- unlock features with talent points
- keep your daily streak going
- use boosters to speed up progress
- compete with other learners
5. Build a habit
This is a very important point. Your approach is best characterized not by your progress on a good day, but by your progress on a bad day. We all have ups and downs, problems and unexpected emergencies. But if you truly want to develop a complex skill like music — it will be much easier if you can build a habit. Practising a little every day keeps neural pathways warm. Behavioural studies (including our own focus‑group logs) show that 5 minutes a day locks in more long‑term progress than a single 15‑minute burst every few days. Small reps trigger the brain’s reward loop more often, cementing both memory and habit.
Here’s why small sessions work better:
- Easily built into real life – coffee queues, commutes, ad breaks.
- Frequent success pings (badges, streaks, boosters) keep dopamine flowing.
- Less mental friction: you never need to “gear up” for a giant study block.
In other words: consistency outranks intensity.
6. Combine Talented with real-world practice
Talented builds your musical foundation, but it works best when paired with offline practice — whether that’s playing an instrument, singing, or studying music theory. The app gives you the knowledge, exercises, and structured learning you need to understand the concepts behind what you’re doing. When you bring these lessons into your offline practice, every session becomes more focused, efficient, and meaningful.
Over time, offline practice and Talented reinforce each other: what you learn in the app informs your hands-on work, and what you do on your instrument deepens your understanding of the app’s lessons. The result is faster progress, more enjoyable practice, and a deeper connection to music.
